Traditional Tortillas from Mexico
Tortillas are a staple bread in Mexican cuisine, commonly served with tacos, enchiladas and more. This easy recipe 📝 will show you how to make authentic homemade tortillas using nixtamalized corn masa harina.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups masa harina corn flour
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
- In a medium bowl, combine the masa harina and salt. Slowly stir in the warm water until a soft dough forms. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Take pieces of dough the size of a biscuit and press into thin rounds using your hands. Cook tortillas on a hot, ungreased comal or skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds per side until lightly charred.
- As they finish cooking, wrap tortillas in a clean kitchen towel or cloth to keep them warm and soft. Enjoy with your favorite taco fillings like chicken, beans, cheese and salsa.
For enchiladas, try filling the warm tortillas with ingredients like onions, cheese and chicken. You can also bake them covered in red or green chile sauces.
Spanish ingredients like chorizo sausage, peppers, rice and seafood also pair well wrapped in these tortillas according to dishes. With some adaptations, these traditional techniques can be applied to many Mexican and Spanish-style recipes.
